Knapp’s Centre Historic Renovation involved refurbishing former J.W. Knapp’s Department Store, an icon downtown Lansing that is listed on National Register Historic Places, into a mixed use .
newly renovated five-story includes restaurants on first floor, Class A space on floors two through four while fifth floor penthouse features high-end residential units, adaptively re-using a landmark .
exterior looks almost same as originally built, but utilizes modern materials. original pale yellow blue metal porcelain panels were replaced with matching steel baked-on enamel panels. original glass blocks used as an extensive architectural feature were also replaced with modern glass block. signature curved front origninal signage was restored to its original state.
interior features a three-story atrium with a skylight at top, pedestrian walkways that span upper floors, a lobby a “fashion incubator” on first floor for designers to create sell their clothing. Original elements interior include portions terrazzo flooring, brass stairway handrails and stairways.
