Jim Ahearn's Bio
Before joining the team at Hausmann-Johnson Insurance in 2008, Jim partnered with HJI as a property and casualty underwriter at Cincinnati Insurance. While he underwrote commercial insurance programs for HJI, he also led a team of claims, audit, and risk control representatives with Cincinnati. This level of involvement gave Jim an intimate knowledge of HJI’s clientele, level of service, and way of doing business.
Jim’s experience lent itself well towards a transition to the agency, giving Hausmann-Johnson the expertise to better negotiate for clients and position them at a higher level in the insurance marketplace. Now as Vice President of Risk Management, Jim is involved with HJI’s most complex insurance programs and largest clients.
Jim became a shareholder of Hausmann-Johnson in 2011. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Elon University and has pursued post-graduate studies. He is a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and holds the Certified Risk Management (CRM) and Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designations from the National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research.
Kyle Von Ruden's Bio
Kyle has been with Hausmann-Johnson Insurance since 2008 and became an owner in 2016. He primarily consults employer groups on developing and/or maintaining their high level of benefits while controlling very important costs. Kyle works with various size employers, speaks publicly on alternative benefit strategies including HRA, HSA, FSA’s and proactively keeps his clients educated on the ever-changing Health Care Reform Requirements. He understands that employees are a business’s greatest asset and having a high level benefits program will undoubtedly help with recruitment and retention. He has previous experience as a Property Casualty Agent with Hausmann-Johnson, and a Commercial Lender in the banking industry.
Kyle graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a BS in Economics. A fun fact – Kyle was a member of the UW–Madison’s Men’s NCAA Division 1 National Champion Soccer team in 1995. In addition to actively participating in two SHRM chapters, he also serves on the Board of Directors with 4 local community based not-for-profit organizations (President / Middleton Chamber of Commerce 2017, Executive Director / Pet Care & Assistance Fund, Treasurer / Middleton United Soccer Club and Board Member of Work Plus, Inc.).
Pat McKenna's Bio
Pat has been with Hausmann-Johnson Insurance since 2007, and oversees the Surety Department and the Construction Industry Group. He has been in the surety industry for over 27 years, including 13 years with a top 3 national surety underwriting company. He leads with a focus on client relationships. By breaking down risk factors and demonstrating how they will be handled, he is able to help surety clients maximize individual job size. Pat also uses his expertise to help clients maintain a strong bond relationship during times of transition.
Pat has a BA in Business Administration from Marquette University, and an MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He is his children’s biggest fan and supports them as they compete athletically in high school and college. He enjoys his own athletic pursuits as well, as he is frequently out running or biking on the local trails. Pat also is a ticket holder for the Green Bay Packers and Marquette University basketball and loves spending the day watching games with family and friends.
Rick Barton's Bio
Rick has over 20 years of experience in safety and risk control, working with clients in many industries including Construction, Mining, Trucking, Manufacturing, and Hospitality. He specializes in assessing risk for the clients of Hausmann-Johnson Insurance to reduce loss potential. Through safety assessments and loss analysis, Rick develops solutions which include safety management techniques, training, and engineering. Additionally, he has been asked to speak at local and national safety conferences on topics such as “How to Manage Safety on a Jobsite”, and “What it takes to be a Safety Leader”.
Rick is an Authorized Instructor of OSHA Regulations Construction and General Industry Regulations. He is an active member of the Wisconsin Transportation Builders Association (WTBA), Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC), the Wisconsin chapter of The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), and the Association of General Contractors (AGC). He is also on the Advisory Board of the Safety Studies Department at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater.
Rick is an avid boater and enjoys sharing time on the water with family and friends. His children are spread across 4 U.S. states and Japan, so he and his wife are often traveling to visit them. He also has attended more than 150 games in the last 15 years to see his beloved Green Bay Packers play.

Craig Butler's Bio
Craig likes to think of himself as a business consultant who happens to be in the insurance industry. With all of the knowledge and experience he has gained since joining Hausmann-Johnson Insurance in 1987, he is able to help clients in many more ways than just building an insurance program. Craig understands both sides of the deal – the insurance company and the client – and he is able to communicate each party’s interests to the other to achieve a win-win. He also genuinely cares about the success of clients. If they are successful, Hausmann-Johnson will be too, but it does not work the other way around.
Craig holds a B.S. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Prior to becoming the Vice President of Operations he held positions as a Commercial Sales Agent, an Account Executive, and the Vice President of Sales. Craig likes to be active on the weekends by spending his time outside, no matter what the temperature. He also enjoys attending high school sporting events and Wisconsin Badger games with his family.
Jesse Hanuszczak's Bio
Jesse has been with Hausmann-Johnson Insurance’s commercial department since 2008. Since joining the agency, he has gained a significant amount of experience with contractors and the construction industry. Many clients depend on him to review and advise them on any insurance issues that may surface in their construction contracts. His goal is to make the insurance aspect of running a business easy and less time consuming so an owner can focus on growing and sustaining a successful business.
Prior to Hausmann-Johnson Insurance, Jesse spent two years as a Product Support Processor for Sentry Insurance. He holds a B.S. in Physical Education from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point and is an avid Badger, Brewer, Bucks and Packers fan. Jesse and his wife became parents in 2015 and he is looking forward to sharing new experiences with his daughter as she grows.
John Erikson's Bio
John joined Hausmann-Johnson Insurance in 2007 and currently serves on the Board of Directors. He has over 30 years of experience as a Commercial Insurance Agent and holds a BA in Economics and Management from Beloit College. John also serves on the Madison Regional Advisory Council of Make-A-Wish Wisconsin.
Karen Stolen's Bio
With over 25 years in the health insurance industry, Karen is always finding creative ways to solve problems for the clients of Hausmann-Johnson Insurance. She embraces the importance of stepping back and really listening to clients to understand their needs and pain points. Anytime a carrier says ‘no’ she sees an opportunity to think outside of the box to find different ways to get results for clients.
Prior to joining Hausmann-Johnson in 2014, Karen worked closely with the HJI benefits team while she was employed with a local carrier. When the opportunity arose for Karen to join the agency, she was thrilled to become a part of a great team that she already knew so well.
An ideal Sunday for Karen includes spending time with her family and cheering on the Green Bay Packers. She also enjoys finding unexpected treasures at garage sales and taking day trips with her husband to explore new places.
Mary Jo Spiekerman's Bio
With over 20 years of human resources management in numerous industries, Mary Jo is uniquely qualified to advise the clients of Hausmann-Johnson Insurance on human resources related issues. She provides guidance on complex employment topics such as employee relations, talent management, recruitment, onboarding, and training. Mary Jo and her team help “lighten the load” for clients that may otherwise spend a lot of time, effort, and energy attempting to do their own risk management and employee benefits administration.
Mary Jo is especially excited about the journey Hausmann-Johnson has taken to become designated as a Great Place to Work by the Great Place to Work Institute. She began studying the process over 10 years ago and when she joined Hausmann-Johnson she knew the pieces were in place to catapult the agency onto the list of the Best Places to Work in Insurance, which was achieved in 2015 and 2016.
Mary Jo is a graduate of Marian University with degrees in Business Administration and Human Relations. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Community Support Network and serves as a consultant to the Personnel Committee of her village board. When she’s not working she takes the time to relax with family and friends at her cabin on the Wisconsin/Upper Michigan border.
Pat Kelly's Bio
Pat has been with Hausmann-Johnson Insurance since 2011, and has over 30 years of experience in employee benefits. He is passionate about building a relationship with clients beyond just being a product vendor. He forms client connections through honest communication, continuous education, and always doing what he says he is going to do.
Pat works with employers of all sizes, and with both fully insured and self-funded medical clients, including defined contribution, HRA, HSA, and FSA. He also works with clients on their disability, life, dental and vision needs.
Pat graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a B.S. in Recreational Resource Management. Pat was a UW Badger football player from 1976-1978, as well as a professional rugby league player in England and France from 1979-1980. He still loves being active year round and shares activities such as biking, skating, skiing and snowshoeing with his family.

Caroline Cole's Bio
Caroline has been an integral part of Hausmann-Johnson Insurance since 1995. She was a Benefit Services Manager for 18 years prior to her current position, where her focus is on large group account management. She believes it is important to do the work for the clients, rather than the clients doing the work for her and she prides herself on offering seamless customer service.
On a weekend afternoon, Caroline can be found hosting gatherings for family and friends, working in her yard, or hitting up the golf course. When weather doesn’t cooperate she enjoys watching tennis or golf on TV.
Sandy Hasz's Bio
Sandy began her career with Hausmann-Johnson Insurance in 1980, when the agency had only eight total associates. In 1982, the agency acquired their first computer for accounting and Sandy began learning how to program. Her position evolved from there and she is now the resident expert on all things related to finance and IT. Throughout her career, Sandy has enjoyed watching Hausmann-Johnson grow while still keeping the same values that it was founded on.
Sandy has an Associate’s Degree in Accounting from Madison Area Technical College. She spends her free time with her family, friends, and dogs and also enjoys working in her yard and garden. She is and avid volunteer with the annual Art Fair on the Square, the Wisconsin Public Television auction, and the United Way Days of Caring.
