Our Story

Job Description

Steel erectors assemble columns, beams and girders according to blueprints and supervisors' instructions. Steel erectors are more commonly known as iron workers. They build bridges, skyscrapers, fences, elevators, bank vaults and other structures, using iron or steel girders, columns and other construction material. Reinforcing iron and re-bar workers position and tie re-bar and steel mesh in forms for strengthening concrete. Steel erectors often work at dangerous heights and with heavy equipment. They pull, push, and pry steel girders into place, connecting them with nuts and bolts or welding them.

Educational Requirements

Steel erectors learn their trade through on-the-job training or through formal apprenticeships. Steel erectors who learn through on-the-job training usually begin as helpers, carrying tools and equipment for experienced workers. With experience they perform more difficult tasks, such as cutting or welding parts together.

Job Duties

Steel erectors erect steel frames, assemble cranes, scaffolds, and derricks used to move and lift structural steel, buckets of concrete, lumber, re-bar and other materials. Steel erectors assemble columns, beams and girders according to blueprints and supervisors' instructions. Steel erectors unload and stack steel girders, bars and columns, so they can be easily raised when needed.

To hoist steel, erectors attach cables or slings to each piece and help guide them with ropes into place. Steel erectors using push pins or the handle of a spud wrench line up holes pre-drilled in the steel pieces that are then fastened to the framework using nuts and bolts, rivets or welding. Steel erectors check horizontal and vertical alignment of individual pieces using levels, transits, laser equipment, or plumb bobs, before welding or bolting pieces together.
