So, now that we've looked at why you should hire us to install your polished concrete floor, let's take a look at exactly why a polished concrete floor may be the right flooring solution for your site.

Concrete Polishing, Sealing and Staining

Concrete polishing and burnishing is a great alternative to epoxy or urethane for flooring, especially when a decorative, low maintenance solution is desirable or required for heavy-use industrial areas such as a warehouses, show rooms, retail premises or schools.

The process of concrete polishing not only provides a high gloss, attractive surface but also actually strengthens the concrete, making it more durable and adding years to its life. Concrete polishing makes the floor highly abrasion and chemical resistant, while also being able to withstand the highest traffic and still look attractive. The process therefore both protects your concrete floor while also enhancing its appearance.

The Concrete Polishing Process - Diamonds Are A Concrete Floors Best Friend

Diamonds are the hardest substance known to man, so it's no surprise that the process of polishing concrete involves first literally polishing the floor with coarse, metal-bond diamonds in order to remove all the major and minor imperfections and get the concrete down to a completely smooth, unmarked surface. Next, a liquid densifier is applied to the concrete, which hardens and strengthens it, while also absorbing the dust produced during polishing. The floor is then polished again with progressively finer grit, resin-bond diamonds to develop shine.

The number assigned to the resin grit correlates to the shine, so for example, while a #400 to #800 grit polish is a traditional warehouse retail floor like Home Depot or Lowe's, a typical glossy-finish polished floor is anywhere from #1500 up to #6000 grit. After the second polishing, the liquid densifier can then be reapplied and the floor re-polished until the required level of shine is achieved. Polished Concrete Floors uses superior lithium densifying liquid for results of the highest standard.

If you want a floor with color, there is a wide variety of standard and some actually stunning colors that will be sure to suit your building and application, which can be added as a dye or stain that is applied to the concrete with the densifier. Finally, a protective sealant layer is applied to the floor and this is burnished into the concrete, providing maximal protection against chemicals and abrasions. This entire process results in a floor that is both functional and attractive and that will last for years to come with minimal maintenance.

Is Polished Concrete Safe?

Although it may seem that a polished concrete floor could be slippery and dangerous for employees and clients, it is actually no more slippery than dry, clean concrete surface. In fact, polished concrete flooring is even more slip-resistant than many of the popular top-coatings available for concrete floors. If you do need extra protection, an anti-slip concrete conditioner can be applied as a final step of the installation. However, even without this, a regular polished concrete floor still meets anti-slip requirements laid out by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Polished Concrete Is The "Green" Concrete Flooring

Another big advantage in installing a polished concrete floor, is that it is an extremely environmentally friendly process. This makes polished concrete flooring a great choice for sites wishing to use more "green" processes during construction, such as schools where children will be in contact with the surface. The application process is entirely odor-free and releases no harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the environment, so it is completely safe for employees, customers or even children to be in the building while the process is taking place.

Concrete polishing systems can be fully accredited by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the internationally-recognized mark of environmentally-friendly excellence. You can therefore choose concrete polishing for your building, safe in the knowledge that you are harming neither the environment nor the health of those around you through your industrial flooring choice. Also, because our polishing system is accredited by LEED, you can obtain various credit points toward your building's LEED certification if that is what you are working toward.
