EPOXY COATINGS

OVERVIEW

Epoxy based coatings are by far the most widely use protective coating in the market place today and have been for the last 50 years. Epoxy coatings can range in durability drastically based upon the amount is solids to liquid ratio the epoxy system possesses. Think about it like this all protective coatings must be applied in a liquid state. The liquid in a epoxy floor coating is the vehicle that transports the solids to the desire location, your floor. Now the second part of the equation is the amount of solids that is left after the liquid off gases or evaporates. The more the solids in the mixture the stronger the dried surface will, but the only issue is the more solids the more volatile the mixture will be, so for example the typical epoxy coating you'll find at a home improvement store will contain approx. 50% - 60% solids and can be worked / applied over the course of a few hours per gal, commercial grade epoxy coating are 96% - 98% solids and can actually dry in the mixed container in as little as 30 mins if not applied in the manufactures pot life time frame. Now that that part is over the next is the.Dekscape is certified by the manufactures products we install. and can easily handle any sized project from a few 1000 sq.' to over 100,000 sq.'.

Contact Dekscape today to help evaluate your facilities needs. We will listen to all your concerns and make a recommendation for a epoxy floor coating that will exceed your needs an has experience installing any type of epoxy based flooring system listed on this page.

Since epoxy coatings vary drastically, probably more so than all of the other protective liquid coatings available today. below we have broken them down to the basic groups that epoxy coatings can typically fall under.

Thin Mil Epoxy Coatings (3 mils to 30 Mils)

High Build Epoxy Coatings ( in excess of 30 Mils )

Flake Epoxy Flooring ( Vinyl Chip Epoxy Flooring )

Epoxy Quartz Flooring ( Resinous Epoxy Flooring )

Moisture Mitigating Epoxy Coatings

Urethane Cement and Urethane Mortars

Urethane cement and mortar are rapidly becoming the specified resinous floor system for commercial kitchens and food processing plants where food is cooked rapidly due to the ability to handle thermal shock better than epoxy counterparts. Urethane cements and mortar can handle high heat situations ranging from 220 degrees F. to 300 degrees F. This of course depends on the manufactures ratings for their product. Urethane cements come in a variety of types the most common is a self leveling type. Just about every manufacture out there makes a urethane cement product these days. These systems are fast application systems with a working time that is very limited which allows turn over of the floor quicker these systems should be installed on;y by a professional flooring contractor like Dekscape, many times painters will try to sell these floors, but typically are not knowledgeable enough to know how the material will react to environmental conditions. Typically these system aren't really much to look at, usually only coming in 2 colors Red and Gray but this is slowly changing due to demand. additionally some systems allow color quartz to be broadcast into the wet cement mortar giving it a more decorative look.

METHYL METHACRYLATE or MMA FLOORING SYSTEMS

MMA floor systems offer something that no other industrial floor coating can boast, it's rapid return to service. Even in temperatures as low as -20 degrees F the system will cure out allowing it to be installed in a operational freezer or walk in, and these coating systems cure within 45 min to 1 hour after the top coating has been installed, the flooring is ready for what ever you want to throw at it.  Additionally MMA can be used as just a final top coat over a urethane cement systems or epoxy based systems. Another advantage to using MMA floors is that each layer fuses to the previous layer no matter how long it has been installed, which means that if your existing MMA floor is in need of a refresher there is no need to remove the entire coating and start all over again, it can literally be cleaned thoroughly and then recoated, NO SANDING OR GRINDING NEEDED.

Dekscape is an approved Silikal America installation contractor for the South Florida region.

Colored & Polished Concrete

Color stained concrete and polished concrete are rapidly becoming big business, many large retail and wholesale corporations are having all of their new stores and existing store converted to polished concrete due to the fact that it's more cost effective over the long run with savings not only on front end be mostly on the back end, maintenance is considerably lower and there is nothing to remove and replace after 5 to 10 years during a remodel. also there are a lot of colors and patterns that can be incorporated into the polished concrete process making it a great choice for restaurants, smaller retail establishments, and automotive repair shops. Please see below for more options release to this product.

Industrial Protective Liquid Applied Coatings for Concrete

Industrial protective liquid coatings are a huge industry in the United States and through out the world. Many architects, owners, and facility owner down play the role of protecting the surface they utilize to run their operations. Lets face it you walk, drive, and store products all over the floor in your facility 24 / 7 and how often do you really look down to see the condition of the floor. Some may answer never while some may answer all the time, but be assured that when things start to go wrong with your flooring system, if you have one it defiantly gets your attention. Thats why it's extremely important to have the right protective coating for the job. From moisture barriers to coatings that are strong enough to drive steel track excavators on to high end decorative epoxy floors Dekscape can design, specify and install the right product for your project.

When It comes to liquid protective concrete coatings there are many variables to take into consideration and these variables can be very confusing to many architects, owners, and facility operators. Typically owners will depend on their designer or architect to utilize the right coating for the project, but many times designers will only specify products that have been solicited to them from manufactures sales reps. Architects are professionals at designing the building and layout, but they are not industrial protective coating experts, and so sub par products get specified many times. Dekscape understands the strengths and weaknesses of the different products in the market place. The truth is different products will provide higher levels of protection on the concrete over others but at the same time as the level of protection goes up typically the decorative feature goes down. so when selecting a coating for your project you will need to choose the factor that is most important to you, protective or decorative. Below is a list of the most widely used liquid protective concrete coatings available.

WATERPROOFING

Waterproofing in it's most basic definition is a liquid coating that is applied to a surface to prevent water intrusion through and into it's surface. Waterproof coatings also called membranes are used on everything from high rises, to parking structures, plaza decks and door and window jambs, their purpose is to protect a buildings contents as well as protecting it's structural integrity from deterioration over time. Especially here in the tropical climate of Florida, the salt air and humidity product some of the most harsh environmental conditions for concrete structures. Believe it or not, many times the waterproofing system used on a structure is the most skimped on when it comes to the budget. People think I can't see it so why put all the money into it, but rest assured that a poorly installed waterproofing system will cost at lease twice as much to replace with a properly applied system.

Dekscape removes, replaces and installs new cold fluid applied waterproofing systems through out the state for a large variety of different structures. Dekscape is also certified by most major waterproofing system manufactures to install their products and offer their respective warrantees such as Tremco / Vulkem , NeoGard, BASF / Sonneborn & Sika Contact us today for consultation, recommendations or some plain old fashion good advice.

FLOORING DEMOLITION

Dekscape offers full service flooring demolition service. We can remove any floor covering any concrete substrate. Dekscape utilizes all the most advanced machinery available on the market today to accomplish this via ride on floor scrapers, diamond grinding machines, and shot blasting. We find that waterproofing contractors and commercial flooring contractors find our services of the most benefit, by allowing them to get a fixed cost to remove the surface covering / coating allowing them to bring their project in on or under budget. Dekscape also has a great response time to your needs, we can mobilize with as little as 24 hours notice ( additional cost may be insured ).

RIDE ON FLOOR SCRAPERS

Ride on floor scrapers are typically used to remove ceramic tile, VCT, glue down carpet, glue, thick adhesives, rubberized waterproofing membranes, and even some industrial coatings. Thin set left over from the tile removal can be hit or miss on removing depending on if the tile was installed properly. Ride on floor machines typically "pop" the tile free of the thin set there by leaving the thin set stuck to the floor. If the thin set is well bonded to the substrate there are 2 ways it can be removed. The most effective way to remove thin set is diamond grinding the other is using chipping hammers with 6" scraper blades, ether way it can be one of the most difficult products to remove.  Dekscape uses both battery operated and propane ride on floor scrapers, allowing us to work anywhere anytime.

DIAMOND GRINDING

Diamond grinding is very effective at removing thicker epoxy coatings, thinset, resinous quartz flooring, flate flooring, & thick waterproofing systems. Please see Diamond Grinding for more information

Shot Blasting

 ICRI Profiles:  3 - 7

Shot blasting is capable of producing ICRI CSP profiles of between 3 - 7 typically.

Overview of Shot Blasting

Shot blasting is a cost effective and environmentally friendly method for preparing concrete, steel, and asphalt surfaces. This labor and time saving process strips thin mil coatings ( under 4 mils ), cleans and profiles simultaneously. Shot blasting leaves the surface immediately ready for the application of coatings or overlays, eliminating drying time and costly disposal procedures associated with other surface preparation methods. Shot blasting produces the highest bonding character of any surface preparation method. Dekscape uses Blastrac shot blasters

Concrete                                                                                                                                        Concrete blasting focuses on preparing roadways, bridges, airport runways, warehouse and factory floors and more. Remove dirt, oil and old markings or clean your concrete surface for overlays and markings.

Steel

Steel blasting is the solution for preparing metal and steel surfaces, such as aircraft carriers, ships, petroleum and water storage tanks, and more. Remove rust, non-skid coatings, paint and marine growth.

Asphalt

Asphalt blasting specializes in removing tire rubber, residue and surface contamination from asphalt surfaces. Preparing an asphalt surface with shot blasting improves skid resistance, micro textures and macro textures.

How it works

A centrifugal wheel for propelling blast media at a high velocity, in a controlled pattern and direction. Ride-on systems use a paddle wheel. The configuration In both types, metal abrasive thrown by the rapidly rotating blast wheel is accelerated towards the surface being prepared. The media strikes the surface and rebounds, along with removed contaminants, into a recovery chamber or separator. The dust collector removes pulverized abrasive, dust, and contaminants. Very little abrasive is lost and the usable media is returned to the storage hopper for recirculation by the blast wheel. Different surface profiles can be achieved by varying shot size, shot flow rate and machine travel speed.

Scarification

ICRI Profiles: 5 - 9

Scarifiers are capable of producing ICRI Profiles between 5 - 9

Typically 8" & 12" scarifiers can produce a ICRI CSP profiles of 5, 6, & 7 if a 8 or 9 is required it could take a very large scarification machine also called a milling machine, this is typically only used for repaving roads.

Overview

Scarifiers, also called surface planers or milling machines, remove high millage coatings, asphalt, and concrete faster and more aggressively than grinders. Scarifiers are versatile surface preparation tools used for concrete, asphalt and even steel surfaces. Models can be connected to an appropriate dust collection system for virtually dust-free operation. Scarifying can help achieve the proper surface preparation and correct surface profile that is critical to a successful and long-lasting coating job, the key to preventing callbacks. They are also very useful for preparing problem areas on concrete slabs: over-troweled burned areas, high spots, curled expansion joints, excessive trowel marks, and weather damage, etc. They are efficiently used for transitioning uneven surfaces and trip hazards. The cutters and spacers can be configured on the drum shafts in a variety of ways for other applications, including the cutting of safety grooves in concrete ramps, walkways and loading docks.

How it Works

Scarifiers use the pummeling action of multi-tipped cutting wheels, or flails, that rotate at high speeds to chip away at the surface to be removed. This action leaves the surface well profiled (very rough) and ready to receive a new coating or if need be we can follow up the scarification with diamond grinding to smooth the scarified surface.
