After many summers of punch and pipe crews, and several years as
Construction Manager for a local developer, David joined William A.
Hazel, Inc. full time in 1991. He opened the Fredricksburg Office for
the company in 1996 and served as the Branch Manager of that office
As President of William A. Hazel, Inc., David is responsible for the
successful management, direction and profitability of the company.
David believes that the company's greatest asset is its employees, and
tries to work with each and every one of them.
David is a graduate of Woodberry Forest School in Madison Virginia.
He has a Liberal Arts degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in
With a BS in Building Construction from Virginia Tech, Mr. Speed
began his career at William A. Hazel, Inc. in 1980. As the Vice
President of Engineering since 1993, Mr. Speed manages both the
Engineering and Purchasing Departments.
His responsibilities include: Soliciting Bids, Bidding, Contracting,
Project Managing, and Purchasing. With his experience and leadership,
the Engineering Department has collaborated with numerous customers to
bid, manage and strategize hundreds of successful projects in Northern
Virginia. His professional staff includes: Project Managers,
Estimators and Purchasing Agents. He’s an active member of numerous
local and national trade associations including the; HCCA, NVBIA,
VTCA, ABC, and NUCA.
Currently he serves as: Trustee for the Sidney R. Johnston Charitable Trust.
Previously he served as: President of the HCCA and a 12-year
Member of the Board, Treasurer of the VUHCC and Board Member for over
10 years, Board Member of the George Mason University Civil
Engineering Institute and Instructor for the Engineering &
Joe Vaughan began his career at William A. Hazel Inc. in 1986.
Starting out in the field as a concrete finisher, Joe has progressed
through the company, from foreman to Site Superintendent, to Area
Superintendent, to General Superintendent, to being named Chief
Operating Officer in 2015.
As Chief Operating Officer/Vice President of Field Operations,
Joe is responsible for the day to day field operations of the William
A. Hazel Company. Joe's extensive field experience, working side by
side with the William A. Hazel Inc. employees and their customers,
throughout many years and thousands of successful projects, brings a
unique perspective to the management of the field operations at the
William A. Hazel Company.
A Pennsylvania native, Joe graduated from Virginia Commonwealth
University with a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Psychology in 1985,
and has remained in Virginia joining the William A. Hazel Companies
shortly there after.
Rick Hurwitt joined our company in 1993 following a career in public
accounting and several years of experience with a local real estate developer.
Rick has been instrumental in improving our processes and
information systems to allow us to better serve our employees and customers.
A graduate of the College of William & Mary (BBA) and Old
Dominion University (MBA), Rick has enjoyed being involved in several
community organizations, most notably the Loudoun County Economic
Development Commission and Leadership Loudoun.
Rick is responsible for our accounting, human resources, IT,
and administrative functions as well as risk management and banking relationships.
