Scope Of Work

Schedule: 12 Months
Size: 76,333

Highlights:

1. Accelerated Schedule.  Project was completed several months prior to contract completion date, which was adjusted by one year due to the complete redesign of the storm water management systems.  Facility was completed while design and construction of the new site features took place.

2. Energy Efficient Features.  Although LEED certification was in its infancy at the time, the project did incorporate energy efficient and sustainable materials and practices.

Project Description:

This project involved the construction of a new 76,333 square foot, two-story elementary school.  Located in Bowie, Maryland, this facility supports Prince George’s County Public Schools.  The school is located within an incorporated city, and is in close proximity to many residential communities and parks.  Close coordination with the City and client was vital to the success of the project.

The school features classrooms for pre-kindergarten, art, science, general studies, and special education.  It includes a gymnasium, kitchen, cafeteria, and centrally located library.

The project involved the complete development of an 18 acre wooded site.  Extensive clearing and grading was required to prepare the site for the building, athletic fields, and access into the facility.  Site features include a baseball field, soccer field, several basketball courts, playground equipment, parking lots, and bus loop.  Asphalt parking lots and roads were installed, along with concrete sidewalks.  Storm water management systems and landscaping complete the site features.

Foundations were constructed with concrete footings and walls, with concrete slab on grade.  The structure consists primarily of structural steel columns and beams, along with areas of CMU load bearing walls.  The exterior of the building is CMU with brick and cast stone veneer.  Composite metal and concrete deck make up the second floor, and bar joists support a built-up roof.  Standing seam metal roof is installed at the canopies and entrances.  Aluminum storefront and entrances were installed.

Interior partitions are primarily gypsum board assemblies with some CMU construction.  Flooring is a mix of VCT, terrazzo, carpet, and ceramic tile.  Ceilings include ACT and gypsum board.  Walls were painted and often received ceramic tile overlay in various designs.  Additional features include built-in millwork, lockers, kitchen equipment, toilet partitions and accessories, and instructional boards.  Metal frames, wood and steel doors, glazing, and hardware was installed.

Mechanical systems include chillers and gas-fired boilers, with VAV and CV duct systems.  Electrical work included power, lighting, fire alarm, data, communication, and security systems.  Sprinkler systems were installed.
