Project Description:

This project constructs a new 143,277 square foot, two-story middle school.  Located in Greenbelt, Maryland, this facility supports Prince George’s County Public Schools, and replaces one of the oldest schools in the County, which was originally built in 1935.  The original school was partially demolished, and remaining section renovated and modernized as a facility for learning and community access.

The school features classrooms for science, art, technology, family and consumer science, English as a Second Language, and special education.  It includes a gymnasium, cafeteria, and media center.

The project site sits on 33 acres and is located behind the existing school and encompasses many of the existing athletic fields.  The site required extensive grading and exporting of soils.  Exterior features include two baseball fields, football and soccer fields, parking lots, and a bus loop.  In addition to concrete sidewalks, pervious pavers are used to provide fire department and maintenance access close to the building.  Extensive storm water management features are utilized, including three large underground sand filters and several bioretention facilities.

Foundations include concrete spread footings and foundation walls tied to slab on grade.  Structural components consist primarily of steel columns and beams, with areas of load bearing CMU walls.  The exterior of the building is CMU with brick and stone veneer.  The second deck is constructed with composite metal decking and roof is primarily steel bar joists.  The roof consists of built-up, green, and standing seam metal.  Aluminum curtain wall windows and storefront complete the building envelope.

Interior construction includes CMU interior partitions.  Flooring is VCT, carpet, resinous, and ceramic tile.  Ceilings are primarily ACT and gypsum board.  Additional features include built-in casework, millwork, lockers, laboratory and kitchen equipment, toilet partitions and accessories, and instructional boards.  Metal frames, wood and steel doors, glazing, and hardware complete the interior.

In addition to the mechanical and electrical equipment described above, building systems include power, high efficiency lighting fixtures, fire alarm, data systems, security, communication, and audio-visual systems.  Wet-pipe sprinkler system protects the building.
