Scope Of Work

What do you get when you add soil plus oil and multiply that by the number of complications possible when you factor in a hospital? If you’re Tyler 2 Construction, that equation also equals a very successful operation for Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy.

The challenge:

Whenever you dig, the odds are good that you’ll encounter something you wish you hadn’t. So when Tyler 2 began excavation of four 20,000-gallon underground tanks as part of a fuel storage upgrade project for Carolinas HealthCare System, we knew to expect the unexpected. When the tanks came up, we encountered significant quantities of unsuitable and hazardous soil. That would mean more digging, all of it beside the facility supply and loading dock area, making it critical to avoid blocking hospital delivery traffic.

The end result:

After removing the existing fuel storage tanks, we also removed and replaced several hundred cubic yards of unsuitable soil. Working with the engineering firm Leach Wallace Associates, we wrapped up the project with the installation of a new tank yard, two new above-ground tanks, a pump house and duct bank for Carolinas HealthCare System. You could say that Tyler 2 has its M.D. in challenging urban sites, hospital environments and the identification, removal and replacement of unsuitable and hazardous materials. And the patient in this operation has made a full recovery.
