The team at McKnight constructed a Science Building for Georgia Regents University to service both the faculty and students. It is a 122,000 square foot, four story building, including one story below grade. The new facility includes several types of classrooms to service the school’s needs, including science labs, darkrooms, and a large greenhouse. The Science Building is an open space with aluminum, glass and clear insulated windows and the luxury of skylight structures. Sheathing, rigid and blanket insulation protect the walls of the building. Floor and wall finishes consist of epoxy, tile, terrazzo, resilient, carpeting, acoustical panels, paint and acoustical ceiling finishes.  The roof covering is bituminous built up. Interior partitions are metal studs and gypsum board. The Science Building is equipped with a sprinkler systems to serve for fire protection.  This site includes asphalt, concrete paving, site furnishing and landscaping. The foundations include spread footings and a slab and concrete basement. Both the building frame and roof deck are cast in place concrete. The exterior building is brick veneer, glass block and curtain wall supported by a wall backup of metal studs. Chilled water air conditioning system and a central, hot water heating system both furnish the Science Building. There is a fume hood system to achieve negative air in labs to eliminate the spread of contaminates. The electrical systems and specialties include computer cabling, clocks, alarm and detection systems, emergency lighting and power systems.
