Our Story

Drywall & Texturing Specialists Servicing MN & WI
Veteran Owned Business

Universal Spray Co. was founded by Gerald Obraske in 1961. Gerald was a pioneer in the ceiling texturing industry developing an entire system for applying the products mechanically instead of the laborious hand-troweling which was the norm.

In 1975, Gerald started Universal Drywall Co., a partnership, with his son, Michael (Mike) Obraske. Mike had been working in the industry with his father since the late 60’s as a sander, finisher and spray man until he left for the Marine Corps. Upon his return, they started this sister-company to complement the work Universal Spray Co. had been doing for years now.

Early in the 1980’s, Mike aquired Gerald’s share of Universal Drywall Co. followed by his purchase of Universal Spray Co. in 1989. The companies were combined into Universal Spray & Drywall, Inc. which has been owned and operated by Mike since that time.

The business began primarily as a company subcontracted to work on residential projects. This made up about 90% of the business during the 1980’s and 1990’s. After the turn of the century, the market began to change in Minnesota, and Universal’s vast experience made them perfectly suited to slide into more commercial-type projects. Small commercial build-outs became a larger part of the business. Universal became more and more experienced in this side of the industry, adding trades like steel-stud framing, acoustical ceilings, specialty finishes, and even painting to the list of skills their contractors could rely on them for.

Today, Universal Spray & Drywall, Inc. is a complete framing and drywall company offering services of all types of projects. Holding true to a motto of “No job too big or too small”, the company prides itself on quality work done by reliable and committed craftsmen.

Universal remains a third-generation family owned and operated business today. Mike Obraske remains the CEO, and his wife, LuAnn is the CFO/Treasurer. Mike’s children, Keith Obraske & Crystal Hoppe, as well as his son-in-law, Craig Hoppe are all actively managing the business. Family core values are an important part of the way business is done at Universal. Honesty, integrity, the drive for excellence, and being a positive entity of the community are just some of the qualities that are brought to each and every job.
