Martin Holmes's Bio
As far back as I can remember I always loved construction, build, remodel and fix things. At Ten years old, I discovered my love of power tools. 47 years later, my passion for building has only grown and evolved.
I was born in 1959 in London, Ontario. My parents were both immigrants from Ontario Canada, was 3rd of four children. My Father before marrying my mother was a builder with his brothers. After immigrating to America and my father traveled for work to support our family. We moved to Iowa and he started his career in farming and hardware at Farm & Fleet Company.
Growing up, I was the youngest of three boys and always the one to help repair and remodel our houses with my father. We moved from Iowa to Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota and finally Chicago. In doing so, I was able to be apart remodeling each house we lived in and from that gained priceless experience. During that time, my father was recruited in 1968 by John Cotter, the president of Cotter and Company (True Value Hardware). He became a department buyer of farm supplies and heavy hardware. There, he finished out his working years and retired after 18 years.
I am proud to have had a father who taught me the real value of work ethics and commitment to customers. In middle school, he let me work for Irv Ross, a local builder.
I swept the job sites and generally kept it cleaned up through the building process. After graduating high school, I enrolled in community college and earned my associate degree. Instead of continuing on and receiving my Bachelors I decided to enter the workforce in building trades as a framer. As is anything, it was hard starting out but I advanced quickly to foremen. I changed trades and companies and in 1986 I started my first company, MHH Construction, in Grayslake, Illinois. I worked primarily along the North Shores of Chicago and Lake County IL with a well-known architect, Mark Golan. His drawings and designs advanced my company from basically nothing to a well-rounded and well known business. I was highlighted in North Shore Magazine for the remodel of the first home ever built in Winnetka, IL. It was an incredible multi-winged addition for a farmhouse at 635 E. Willow Road. We added 3000 square feet for Mr. Thomas Lys and his wife, a professor at the Kellogg College at Northwestern University of Illinois.
In 1994, I relocated from Chicago to Phoenix. I worked for the JTM Development Company of Scottsdale. Construction practice differs greatly in Arizona from Illinois; construction in Arizona is fast paced than in the Midwest. Construction requirements are much more stringent in Arizona. After JTM, I went to work for Pratt Development Company where I was the framing superintendent. Later I worked for T’s Construction Company of Carefree, and then I went into commercial construction with Moline Construction Inc. of Phoenix, AZ. During my employment with Moline Construction I managed a multitude of projects including the new facility of Vermeer Equipment in Tempe, AZ as well as a new warehouse and plant in Tempe, Arizona Golf Resort, Troon North in Scottsdale and assisted in the infrastructure of Estancia Country Club in North Scottsdale.
While working in and around Carefree, I fell in love with the North Valley and knew that I wanted to settle here. I married my beautiful wife during this time and we now have three children. In 1997, I opened High Chaparral Construction Inc. in Carefree. We built over 34 Custom Homes In Carefree, & Cave Creek, AZ before the economic downturn hit Arizona in 2008.
