Our Story

Fascinated with building since the age of thirteen, James T. Thompson, known by his friends as “Tim”, worked his way up the ladder as a carpenter until a well-known Ohio disaster sparked his interest in starting his own company. The severe 1974 storm that spawned tornadoes in Xenia led 20-year-old Tim to offer his services to help rebuild damaged homes. From the experience he gained as a brand new business owner, Tim founded Thompson Building Associates as it exists today in 1978. Starting with a staff of three (including himself) in a small leased facility on Columbus’ east side, Tim steadily grew the company until another weather disaster – a severe hail storm – hit Grove City in 1981, allowing Thompson Building Associates to double its volume, hire additional staff and introduce the company’s first computerized estimating program. In 1984, Thompson Building Associates branched into remodeling, becoming one of the first “Mr. Build” franchisees in the United States. Over the years, the company has continued to grow – and secure its reputation with property owners and insurance carriers alike as Central Ohio’s premier restoration company. In 1995, the company moved into its first fully-owned office location and Tim began efforts to aggressively invest in training for all employees, including himself. The company became an active member of Business Networks, a corporate peer-coaching business that linked it with other successful restoration contractors around the country who act as a de-facto “;board of directors,” evaluating fellow member companies and suggesting steps that can be taken to improve. Along with his Business Networks counterparts, Tim co-founded a software company to develop an industry-specific database and job tracking software system. The software became the accepted forerunner of the standard used today by restoration companies nationwide. It was during this time that everyone at Thompson Building Associates also became vested in “knowing and understand the numbers,” the lifeblood of any business success.

As a result, Thompson Building Associates introduced an employee-advancement and measurement system to foster personal growth and allow employees to grow into new management positions. To complete the “full-service restoration contractor” model many property owners and insurance claims personnel prefer, Thompson rolled out the Clean Team – a fully-staffed contents cleaning and storage department – to join the 24 hour RESQ24 Emergency Services division responsible for emergency immediate fire and water damage response, as well as the company’;s mainstay reconstruction division. A material selection and purchasing system, featuring a full-time purchaser, was also introduced to assist homeowners with this critical – and often stressful – step in the property repair process. In 2003, the company moved into its current 20,000 square foot office and warehouse complex, in the process adding the Contractor of the Year award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) for the design and build out of the facility to its many years of recognition as one of Qualified Remodeler’s Top 500, Remodeling magazine’s Big 50 and Business First of Columbus’ Fast 50 growing companies in Central Ohio two years in a row. With over 20,000 projects completed since 1978, Tim Thompson has seen his company’s capabilities range from smaller, $250.00 roof repairs to multi-million dollar fire damage restoration projects – all while giving the same consideration to both types of customer. For this reason Thompson Building Associates remains the choice of many of the largest insurance carriers and their Central Ohio claims representatives for immediate emergency service and quality property damage repair.
