Scope Of Work
William S. White Building
The William S. White Building is a spacious 4-story structure and the largest building on the University of Michigan-Flint campus. The University wanted a visible, accessible, user-friendly face to the community, and this building delivers!
The challenge was to develop a space to serve the needs of ten diverse departments, ranging from early childhood development to healthcare/nursing to radio and television production studios. The building needed flexibility to accommodate future projections of class size, programs, teaching requirements and technology. In the auditorium are two larger classrooms, tiered u-shaped seating provides clear sight lines. Audiovisual systems were designed to accommodate a variety of teaching styles, including distance learning.
Coordinating the massive mechanical and electrical systems was our largest challenge, and the solution was to segment the construction into three phases.
Phase I was the largest building section and it contains the majority of the classrooms and mechanical infrastructure. Phase II includes the major architectural features of the exterior. Phase III was the focal point of the exterior, the radial architectural concrete sunshade.
