Our History

After working many years with Mastercraft Fence, and as an early pioneer to modern trends and methods in fencing, Leonard Scofield founded A-1 Fence Company in 1953. From its small base on 4th Street in Santa Ana, the company grew and early-on developed a broad base of local commercial and industrial repeat customers.

The business continued to expand and by the late 1980’s, A-1 had become a regional fencing contractor covering the Greater Los Angeles and Orange county market area. Upon Leonard’s retirement in 1987, Norm Shepherd took over the company and moved it into a new phase with broader product line offerings and professional business management.

By 1990, the company was ready for another step towards new markets, product sophistication and technology. Jim Sypitkowski joined A-1, bringing his previous engineering and marketing skills. Following a number of small acquisitions to broaden its customer base, A-1 further solidified its reputation for quality and service.

In today’s market, with all its economic uncertainties, the A-1 Fence Company team of professional business management, technical capabilities, highly qualified estimators and installation crews are properly positioned to get your job done cost-effectively and on-time.

In 2015, with the World Games for Special Olympics being held in the Los Angeles area, we are continually looking for volunteers and donations to help support this effort.  If you have interest, contact Special Olympics www.sosc.org or our office and we will put you in touch.
