Hughes Group, Inc.

The E.H. Hughes Company was founded in 1937 by Edgar H. Hughes.  Some of the Company’s first work was leasing equipment to a WPA federal project in Scottsburg, Indiana, and they would continue to rent equipment until 1945.  Around that same time, the Company started performing projects in the basement and sewer business.  When Edgar became ill in 1946, one of his sons, George E. Hughes, Sr. took over the business with his mother and two brothers.  The Company continued work on small sewer projects until 1950.  From 1950 to 1970, the Company expanded the sewer business and would eventually dominate the industry in Southern Indiana. Building on their success, they entered the sewer and wastewater treatment plant business, heavy highway construction and airport markets. From 1970 to 1990, the Company entered the heavy highway and bridge preservation service business, along with the asphalt and concrete paving markets, all while maintaining their thriving sewer business. 

Starting in 1990, shortly after the Company changed their name to Hughes Group, Inc., the third generation, led by James P. Hughes and Jeffery S. Hughes, decided to direct their focus on the heavy highway and bridge preservation business under the following entities:  American Contracting & Services, Inc., Hydro-Technologies, Inc., Mid-America Milling Company, LLC and Modified Concrete Suppliers, LLC.  Our goal is to provide a full-service solution for bridge rehabilitation services across the country through our sister companies that can handle the many specialized steps of resurfacing from start to finish.

Now, in the 2020s, the fourth generation of Hughes has started working for the Company.  Corey Hughes, Benjamin Hughes, Kramer Koetter (Hughes), and Lillian Bedair (Hughes), are all active members of the Company. As a proud family company, we are excited to see what the future holds for the descendants of Edgar H. Hughes over 80 years after the inception of his company.

Today, the Company is led by James P. Hughes, President/CEO, Jeffery S. Hughes, Executive VP, Roy A. Zimmerman, Executive VP, and Mark J. Burdick, CFO.  The Company continues to provide the same industry-leading, heavy highway construction services it has offered since the early 90’s. We have developed not only a trustworthy reputation but a market that stretches over 30 states in any given year.
