Why Wood?…Strong, Flexible, Renewable, Beautiful and worth protecting

All materials have their place. No one is suggesting we make medical equipment out of Douglas Fir. But for domestic construction, wood is the most sustainable and versatile building material we have. There is no material more malleable with the strength to weight properties of wood.

Wood is soft enough to be machined and cut with hand tools, and strong enough to stand up buildings several stories tall. It grows with little intervention in every corner of the world in every imaginable color, texture and density. The cost to harvest is relatively low and the output of energy for production is small compared to steel and concrete. Additionally, trees offset the carbon footprint of producing wood products by consuming carbon during their growth cycle and converting it to the oxygen we breathe. No laboratory can equal what nature has already developed.

With that in mind, wood consumers have a responsibility to our customers and to the planet to protect this resource for future generations. Beechcraft believes that programs like the Forest Sustainability Counsel are the start of this stewardship, but that the primary requirement of sustainable design is to make a product that will live a full life of use equal to the time it takes to regrow the resources used in its production. To that end we design and engineer our projects to be extremely durable and repairable to avoid excess waste, as well as seek out timeless aesthetics in lieu of passing trends wherever possible to encourage re-use.
