When a client falls in love with an 'estate sale' mid nineteenth century townhouse, the challenges to update it without stripping its inherent charms
are myriad and the solutions become ad hoc and inventive Installing an up-to&te mechanical system and a few incongruous creature comforts (like
the monolithic soaking tub in the middle of a sleeping parlour) without neutering the structure's original character was a mandate achieved by celebrating and gently massaging some of the existing flaws attributed to the wear and tear of age. Wood and plaster were lovingly restored and the crooked stair, original shutters and patchwork moldings were seamlessly integrated to communicate a palpable sense of domestic history.
