Scope Of Work

A Banner Team

Out of the desert, an oasis of compassion has emerged – Banner Desert Medical Center, the largest, most comprehensive hospital in Metropolitan Phoenix’s East Valley, with the busiest emergency department in the state.

Barton Malow was construction manager for the medical center's new Desert Medical Pavillion – a state-of-the-art five-story medical office building and six-story parking structure; these components connect to the main hospital at the second floor level. Extensive coordination – among the City of Mesa, the Mesa Fire Department, Banner Desert security and facilities personnel, all utility companies, developer Lillibridge Healthcare Real Estate Trust, designer Orcutt/Winslow Partnership, Barton Malow field staff, and all subcontractors – was required to support patient-care activities on this busy campus. Construction efforts were initially focused on the 90,000 sf medical office building. Early completion of the superstructure allowed the more complex mechanical systems and interior finishes to follow. The first phase of the build-out for the medical suites was accomplished along with the original core and shell, as well as the new parking structure. The second phase of medical suites required more extensive trade synchronization to accommodate physician-office operations. Work was typically conducted between midnight and 8:00 am, so doctors could practice undisturbed. A particularly sensitive issue was the nearby helipad that averages 150 flights per year. Emergency helicopter flights continued even while construction cranes were on site. To ensure safety, all crane operations were halted and “powered down” each time an emergency flight came in or out of the hospital. Banner security personnel were critical to the timely notification of the construction team. Such seamless communication ensured that operations for this 600-bed hospital remained undisturbed. Though the work required technical expertise of all project participants, it was truly the excellent communication and coordination that ensured project success.
