Our Story

About the Studio
Palette Architecture is a full-service architectural design practice.  Our focus is on creating tailored experiences and signature spaces to combat the generic found in much of the contemporary built environment.  Our methods include an iterative approach, collaborative relationships with clients and vendors, and a focus on setting relevant criteria to evaluate the design process.

History
Palette’s three founding partners met in our first architecture studio at Columbia University.  After working for several years at internationally renowned architecture offices in New York City, we formed Palette Architecture in 2010.  What ties us together is a shared belief that exceptional design is the product of focused problem solving.

Our diverse backgrounds have contributed to an ability to view our projects through multiple lenses; an attitude that we carry forward as our office grows.  This dynamic allows us to find creative and uncommon solutions to problems faced by our current clients; including limited budgets, space constraints, and difficult existing conditions.

Commitment to Realizing the Built Vision
Palette Architecture was founded on a commitment to produce high quality built spaces and experiences.  Unlike many of our contemporaries, Palette eschewed paper projects in it’s founding years, and focused on collaborating with small organizations in need of architectural services to help them realize the construction of their organizational vision.  Palette believes in an ever-increasing digital world, that physical spaces matter, and the implementation of architectural design is the key to making unique experiences.

In the abbreviated history of the office, Palette has managed to complete dozens of projects throughout all parts of the city and is currently administering dozens more.  This experience has grown the firm’s knowledge and expertise in many different forms of construction and building typology.  This knowledge is rolled back into each and every project we oversee and design.  We believe in physical spaces, and the design of those space is a careful balance of space, light, material, technology, labor, and program.  Each element must be properly balanced to achieve elegance in our goals for the space.

Each of the partners brings a special set of skills to the balance, with each partner contributing to the process as their experience fits the project’s needs.  Some of our relevant expertises include; constructing public projects, designing cultural spaces, managing regulatory agencies, code compliance, construction detailing, material selection, managing contractors and responding to public relations.

Approach
As a younger-generation design practice, Palette Architecture offers our clients several unique benefits.  Our practice offers an agile and flexible design process; technological savvy in digital practice; and a dedication to resolving core project issues through design.  The leadership at Palette built their careers on designing and implementing challenging and innovative designs and they bring that spirit to every project.  Innovation must be rooted in a knowledge of standard practices and design with an understanding of where the rules can be bent and an energy to find new solutions.

Our practice has integrated the latest 3D visualization and parametric documentation software in a streamlined design process, allowing us to focus our energies on project goals.  Our cloud-based internal infrastructure allows for streamlined, secure, and persistent communication with our clients and sub-consultants.  However, technology is only as useful as the person operating it, thus we strive to have the most knowledgeable and capable people overseeing all of our projects.

Having a successful project begins with understanding the budget, schedule, and a fundamental project goals.  We incorporate this understanding into any design plan at the outset.  Our design approach centers around the project’s requirements, using them as touchstones to inspire a highly performing design solution.

As a small office, we operate with a high level of efficiency by structuring our process to the specific nature of our projects.  Our leadership is energetic and accessible, you will always have a decision maker with experience in the problem available at all times.  We know that responsiveness is key to a project success and we strive to always be accessible to our clients.  We believe our project portfolio demonstrates our ability to deliver on our clients goals.?

Open floor plan living space on the parlor level of this townhouse. The owner wanted the kitchen to be integral during social gatherings, so we designed a U-shaped kitchen with counters facing both the living and dining areas. A small room connects with large sliding doors, doubling as a kid's play area and housing the owners' record and CD collections.
