President G.G. Harrison founded Designer’s Specialty Millwork in the summer of 1994. During the past 15 years, this company has grown from a small warehouse with five employees to a 40,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in Fort Lauderdale, consisting of nearly 100 employees.
Before Designer’s Specialty Millwork, Harrison owned a South Florida interior design firm that specialized in commercial projects. Her ongoing deadline frustrations due to delays with millwork and casework delivery culminated in the opening of her own manufacturing facility to service her clients.
During the first year, Designer’s Specialty supplied cabinetry only to Harrison’s interior design firm. Early delivery dates quickly caught the attention of the General Contractors she worked with, and as a result, Designer’s Specialty soon began working on projects inspired by other designers.
As this company consistently met tight deadlines for its cabinetry work, the demand for our services grew. By also excelling at high-end millwork and casework, Designer’s Specialty has continued to gain momentum with a growing list of completed prestigious projects.
Designer’s Specialty Millwork prides itself on always being reliable, innovative, and high-quality. This company looks forward to creating even more history as we continue to make great strides within the industry.
Project deadlines are serious business at Designer’s Specialty. Our reputation is built on the fact that we deliver and install projects on or before their due date. It’s not uncommon for this company to voluntarily install work out of sequence so that the other trades can come in as early as possible. Designer’s Specialty recognizes that working closely with other trades is often the best way to make up time on a project that is falling behind schedule. The goal is always the same make the contractor look good so that we all can get the next project.
Designer’s Specialty believes that creating and installing our own work guarantees high-quality. Every panel, cabinet, and molding is manufactured, stained and pre-finished in house. With these capabilities, production can be expedited should a project have a truncated schedule. Designer’s Specialty also maintains our own crews of installation carpenters, now totaling over 40. Knowing from experience that finding the right people to entrust with important finish elements can be a challenge, Designer’s Specialty created the Apprenticeship Program to ensure its future growth. This concept stemmed from Harrison’s belief that fine carpentry is a learned trade passed on throughout the generations. Therefore, it is the responsibility the company’s skilled carpenters to pass on their knowledge to a competent assistant.
Another important philosophy of Designer’s Specialty sparked the initiation of a new division the Value Engineering Department. Directed by Harrison personally, the mission of the new department is to review the company’s current projects and offer options in order to meet the specified budget. Their philosophy is to be subtle and unobtrusive, always respecting the vision created for the project. At Designer’s Specialty, we believe budget should not be a prime consideration during design, only during the execution.
The mission of Designer’s Specialty Millwork aims to provide excellent service and product to our clients. By manufacturing and installing the projects ourselves, providing on-time deliveries, and working creatively within the budget, Designer’s Specialty has left an impression on this industry. Designer’s Specialty was recognized among our peers and named “Business of the Year” by the Latin Chamber of Commerce. Due to our esteemed reputation, Designer’s Specialty is often requested by name to join a project.
