Scope Of Work

Montana State University (MSU) hired McKinstry as their Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory consultant to help identify and implement tangible actions to reduce campus GHG emissions. McKinstry also supported MSU in meeting their obligations as a signatory to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) by identifying emissions that the university could offset or neutralize.

McKinstry began by working with MSU to identify and establish the appropriate working groups necessary to develop the GHG Inventory. McKinstry reviewed the full suite of emissions that might be attributed to the University’s carbon inventory, focusing on three areas: direct greenhouse gas emissions, from sources owned or controlled by the university; indirect emissions, caused by the generation of purchased electricity consumed by the university; and other indirect emissions that are a consequence of the university’s activities, such as business travel, outsourced activities, the extraction and processing of purchased materials, and the use of sold products and services.

McKinstry used the Clean Air Cool Planet’s most recent campus GHG inventory as recognized by the ACUPCC to compile the GHG emissions inventory and presented MSU with a report of their carbon risk to facilitate MSU’s understanding of their carbon sources and opportunities to reduce their carbon output.
