John D Maulin's Bio
As a 7th grader, CSHQA Executive Vice President John Maulin started looking into jobs. He wanted a career that would combine art, office work, and time outside—architecture fit the bill. That decision has informed the rest of his life: where to attend school, what to do in art class, how to question convention, how to see the world. (He even met his wife in architecture class.)
For more than 30 years, John has enjoyed working with clever people and solving problems with them. He finds joy in work by questioning and understanding project goals and then creating fantastic environments. He has been involved with many of CSHQA’s most important projects, including the Idaho State Capitol restoration; Columbia High School in Nampa, ID; the Boise Art Museum expansion; and Saint Alphonsus Emergency Department renovation in Boise, ID. Each project included complicated or limited budgets, tight timelines, massive collaboration, and complex problem solving.
John loves to travel and has visited Europe six times in the past seven years, but his home life is especially rewarding: he enjoys spending time with his wife and their “fantastic” kids.

Education

BA Architecture, University of Washington, 1987
Keith Wong owes his career to his junior-high and high-school teachers, who encouraged him through every industrial arts class he took. Now, as a Senior Architect, he gives back to the next generation of students and teachers through his work. He specializes in K-12 education architecture, creating inspiring and nurturing learning environments.
His most recent project, Vista Grande High School, is a state-of-the-art facility in Casa Grande, Arizona, which brought Keith back to the state where he earned his master’s in architecture. The school melds the past, present, and future of the community into one building. He drew upon all of his talents to design it—building client relationships, design, project management, consultant coordination, specification writing, construction administration, and CADD. When the project was finished, Keith watched it come full circle as the building was presented to the community.
Kent A. Hanway's Bio
CSHQA President Kent Hanway grew up building things: A fort in the corner of the backyard, a small-scale model car in his bedroom. He would sketch out his ideas and change them as he moved along (with a few cartoons thrown in for good measure). His two loves — building and drawing — came together when a teacher introduced him to drafting. The technical aspects of drafting, as well as the math involved, hooked him. From there, he started designing, drawing, and building even more: dressers, waterbeds, tables, chairs, cabins. Architecture seemed like the natural way to make his interests into a career.
Under Kent’s leadership, CSHQA has built upon its reputation for quality, customer service, innovative design, responsiveness, excellent construction documents, and meaningful relationships. The apex of his philosophy is CSHQA’s own building: It reset the firm’s perception in the community and made a major design statement, all while pushing the envelope on environmentally friendly design and state-of-the-art technology. The building has elevated CSHQA’s standing and its reputation for design.
Kent rarely takes a break from building. He and his wife are licensed residential contractors who always have a project under construction, and they perform most of the hands-on work themselves. He’s also an explorer: A scuba diver, a motorcyclist, a traveler, and a learner.

Education
AS Architectural Technology, Salt Lake Community College (Formerly UT Technical College), 1976
Scott Beck, Managing Architect, insists he didn’t excel at his first drafting class — but he definitely caught the bug. He enrolled in a technical drafting program and fell in love with the technical side of architecture. That was more than 40 years ago.
Scott specializes in educational facility planning and design in his role as Managing Architect. He is engaged from the moment a new building is conceived, winning the confidence of clients with his attention to details from programming to completion. One of his favorite projects, the additions to Chandler High School in Chandler, Arizona, involved re-planning and expanding the historic campus to meet modern needs. Scott and his team had to earn significant buy-in from the community and the surrounding neighborhoods to build sports fields, tennis courts, and a 50-meter competition swimming pool and dive tank, among many other improvements. In the end, Scott and his team were given a beautification award by the city.
Scott has been happily married for 40 years and is happiest when he’s able to spend time with his five children and 11 grandchildren. He is still involved with the Boy Scouts and, if he gets a chance, likes to play a little golf.

Architectural Exchange Program Architecture, Universidad La Salle, 1981
Jorge Pierson says his career is due to the influence of his father. He was a commercial residential contractor who admired architecture and architects and thought Jorge would be good at it. Jorge found himself working with his dad’s company and by the time he went to college, architecture was his choice.
Jorge appreciates a client who understands good design and gets fired up about a good project, a good set of drawings, and a good contractor to make them come to life. He is a creative problem solver who specializes in highly buildable designs. A favorite was Garrett’s Tempe facility (now owned by Honeywell), which he oversaw from conceptual design to the building’s opening.
As Regional Manager of the Phoenix office, Jorge has focused on expanding CSHQA’s work in Arizona and elsewhere. CSHQA has been designing retail projects in Arizona since 1988, but did not have a physical presence until Jorge was hired to launch the Phoenix office in 2008. Since then, he has worked on retail, office, recreational, and hospitality projects.
Outside of work, he spends time with his family and dog or enjoying Diamondback games and meals with his friends.
“Architects say we are the ones behind the built environment, but the truth is it is our clients who are really behind it. We are just a process that makes their desires into reality. No clients, no architecture.”
