Bayside Fire Station No. 2

Project Information

Project Location:
San Diego, CA
Status:
Completed
Structure Type:
Fire / Police Station

Scope Of Work

The new Bayside Fire Station No. 2, located in the Little Italy District of downtown San Diego, will enable the local Fire Department to provide faster emergency response for the waterfront’s commercial, civic, and growing residential areas west of the existing downtown railway system. The new Fire Station is situated on a 10,000 square foot corner site, across from the San Diego County Administration Building.

The site restrictions in this busy downtown location resulted in an innovative four-level design created by architect Rob Wellington Quigley FAIA. The building includes an underground parking structure, concrete podium deck supporting the apparatus bay at the ground level, and firefighter dorms and common areas on the second and third floors – all connected by an emergency access slide and fire poles to the apparatus bay. The living areas include a gym, planted rooftop terrace and kitchen for firefighter personnel. Site improvements include new wet and dry utilities, signaled intersection replacement, and street/sidewalk improvements along Pacific Highway. This project is slated to receive LEED Gold certification from the USGBC.
