Our Story

Martin Building Development was founded in 1988 by John Martin.  John was introduced to construction management as a planning associate in the corporate offices of Flour Daniel International Construction Company in Greenville, South Carolina.  After a year in the home office planning and scheduling department, John was transferred to the first "chemicals from coal" facility construction project in Johnson City, Tennessee where he gained valuable field experience. 

Upon completion of the Tennessee Eastman Project, John took a position as Director of Business Development with a regionally based design/build firm in Northern Illinois.  There he honed his skills as a building designer, project manager, and construction company executive.

After working in construction management for over eight years, John started Martin Building Development serving the industrial, institutional and commercial construction market place.  He has been involved with numerous projects in the Northern Illinois area and with projects in Mississippi, Wyoming and Wisconsin. With today's technology and easy of travel, John is able to manage the design and construction of projects over a wide geographic area.  

It is John's mission to serve his clients with the highest level of professionalism as he pursues excellence in each project.

Historically, it was the Master Builder that was commissioned with the complete responsibility for a construction project.  For twenty four years Martin Building Development has been helping clients successfully meet their building needs through the implementation of the Design/Build method of construction utilized by the Master Builders.  The principles that guided the Master Builder of the past, are the keystones to the successful completion of your next Martin Building Development, design/build construction project: 

Single Source Responsibility

Single Source Responsibility is the isolation of responsibility for all aspects of a construction project into a single entity that makes the Design/Build Method of Construction so successful. When commissioned with this responsibility, Martin Building Development begins with a commitment to the needs of the client that will be the driving force through out each phase of Project Development.  

The Design/Build Process (Commodity, Delight, & Firmness)

Commodity (Functional Design):  It is important to understand that the first phase of any project is Design, and that "Cost is a function of Design." The perfecting of a project's design is a process that involves the skill of the designer to ascertain, interpret and translate the needs of the client into a building design that is both functional and profitable. To accomplish this, the designer draws on his imagination and design experience, to lead a collaboration with the client, other design professionals, and construction systems specialists.

Delight (Appealing & Attractive Design):  It is a rare ability that can balance Form and Function in a way that adds esthetic value to a project, and create an image that is consistent with the client's needs. Too often, an over emphasis on simplicity or complexity of design can lead to barrenness or confusion.

Firmness (Sound Construction):  Even in the earliest stages of the design process, it is the commitment to sound construction practices that assures a successful finished project. There are no short cuts to quality construction.  The selection of construction systems that best meet the needs of the client is of the utmost priority. Choosing the cheapest is generally not the most cost effective.
