The University of Houston’s entrepreneurial teams have formed over a dozen companies in the last several years. The university wanted to create a space to allow these fledgling companies to grow without having the office overhead typical of start-ups. They hired Vaughn to convert an existing portion of the Energy Research Park (ERP) campus into office and conference space to support these businesses.
As construction manager-at-risk, we built out the second level of Building 4 on the west side of campus. We installed raised access flooring to support the electrical and telecom/data systems throughout the space. We painted the existing structural steel, including the columns, beams, joists, and underside of the roof deck, and left them exposed for an industrial feel.
The build-out includes glass-front office and conference spaces accented with modern interior finishes in UH “Cougar” red. A full-service break room features a custom wood panel wall and includes two refrigerator/freezer combinations and ample storage space for hosting events. We installed new light fixtures equipped with occupancy sensors and lighting controls throughout the facility to promote energy efficiency.
The students and young business leaders of the future now have a modern environment in which to develop, promote, and grow their companies.
