Scope Of Work

In October 2007, the Utah Transit Authority selected the Kiewit-led joint venture (including JV Partners Herzog and Parsons) to design and construct the $272 million Mid-Jordan Light Rail Extension Design-Build Project. The project was an extension of the existing North-South TRAX Line into the city of West Jordan, Utah and terminating in Kennecott’s Daybreak development in South Jordan, Utah.

The Mid-Jordan LRT consisted of 11 miles of double ballasted track construction, on which eight miles ran along an existing freight track corridor where temporarily-separated freight traffic was maintained. The work included eight structures, 10 passenger platform stations and eight park and park-and-ride lots. One of the eight structures was a retro-fit/rehab of an existing UTA portal underneath the UPRR mainline track. This work was completed in phases to maintain UPRR traffic throughout construction. One of the eight park-and-ride lots included two transit-oriented development parking garage structures. Additional features of the work included utility construction and relocation, 32 grade crossings, nine traction power substations, and the installation of the overhead catenary system, signalization and communications. This project required extensive coordination and communication with several stakeholders including UTA, UDOT, Murray City, Midvale, West Jordan, South Jordan, and Kennecott Land.
